Key Features

Big, Beautiful Display Combined with All-In-One Simplicity

The evolution of the Apple iMac.
The new iMac has come a long way from the first 15-inch iMac. The all-in-one design of the first flat-panel iMac cleaned up the desktop, and put everything you need--display, processor, graphics card, hard drive, optical drive, memory, and more--inside one simple enclosure. New technology inside and out makes the new iMac a worthy addition to the all-in-one dynasty.

This 21.5-inch model features an edge-to-edge glass display that covers nearly the entire front of the enclosure. When all you see is the display, nothing gets between you and what's onscreen. Movies, TV shows, websites, photos--everything looks stunning on the new 16:9 widescreen iMac display. And the LED backlighting in the new iMac helps push more light through the pixels with remarkable brightness and efficiency. And because the LED backlight doesn't take up much space, the iMac enclosure stays thin--even with all the high-performance components inside.

The iMac display is designed to look great from almost any angle. A technology called in-plane switching (IPS) makes this possible. Whether you're sitting in front of the display or standing off to the side, you'll get a perfect picture with superb color consistency and no loss of detail.

The wider iMac display allows more room to separate the two hottest components, the CPU and the GPU. This keeps things cool inside the iMac enclosure. Apple engineers also implemented an intelligent control system that monitors temperatures and delivers just the right amount of airflow to critical components. And the three fans inside iMac have been tuned to be ultraquiet.

While you'll find a collection of ports on the back of iMac, you won't find much else. A seamless, precision-forged enclosure makes the back one continuous aluminum surface. And there's only one cord: the power cord.

Wireless Magic Mouse and Keyboard
Forget the mouse as you know it. Every iMac comes with the wireless Magic Mouse: the world's first Multi-Touch mouse. Use it once and you'll wonder how you ever used anything else. There's no scroll ball, no clunky wheel, no cord, and no visible button. Instead, the Magic Mouse uses Multi-Touch technology to let you control everything with simple gestures. Give them a try and you'll find that Magic Mouse changes the way you interact with your computer. Built-in software lets you configure Magic Mouse any way you want. Its smooth, seamless design is ambidextrous, and it supports two-button clicking--without buttons.

The iMac banishes desktop clutter completely with a wireless keyboard to go with the wireless Magic Mouse. This low-profile keyboard takes up less desk space--24 percent less--than larger keyboards. There's no numeric keypad, so you can place your mouse comfortably next to the keyboard. And built-in Bluetooth means there are no cables to connect.

Built-in Wi-Fi
High-speed 802.11n wireless technology is built into iMac. And with Time Capsule or the AirPort Express Base Station, every computer in every room can wirelessly connect to iMac, the Internet, and each other. Over this network, everyone can print, surf the web, and play music on iTunes through your home stereo--wirelessly.

iSight Webcam
Hidden behind the glass display at the top of iMac is an iSight camera. Use it with iChat, and you can be anywhere without actually being there. Video chat with up to three of your friends, share a video with a colleague, or present to a client. Use iSight with Photo Booth for fun photo effects. And there's no need to waste valuable primping time installing software or configuring the camera.

Pre-Loaded with Mac OS X Snow Leopard and iLife '09

Every Mac comes with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the world's most advanced operating system, and iLife, Apple's innovative suite of applications for managing photos, making movies and creating and learning to play music. Snow Leopard builds on a decade of OS X innovation and success with hundreds of refinements, new core technologies and out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange. iLife features iPhoto, to easily organize and manage photos; iMovie with powerful easy-to-use new features such as Precision Editor, video stabilization and advanced drag and drop; and GarageBand which introduces a whole new way to help you learn to play piano and guitar.

Installed software

  • Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard (includes Time Machine, Quick Look, Spaces, Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Safari, Address Book, QuickTime, iCal, DVD Player, Photo Booth, Front Row, Xcode Developer Tools)
  • iLife '09 (includes iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, iDVD)

Environmentally Friendly Design

Because Apple designs both hardware and software, we can reduce our environmental footprint in ways others can't. For starters, a highly efficient power supply reduces the amount of power wasted when bringing electricity from the wall to your Mac. Unlike a lot of PCs, a Mac uses energy-efficient hardware components that work hand in hand with the operating system to conserve power--even between keystrokes.

A Mac also doesn't contain a lot of toxic materials. All Mac displays are mercury and arsenic free, and the internal components are free of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs).

Efficient Power Supply
The iMac includes a highly efficient power supply that reduces the amount of power wasted when bringing electricity from the wall to your computer. Lower power consumption reduces energy bills and lessens the environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.

Advanced Power Management
Unlike a lot of Windows-based PC systems, iMac uses energy-efficient hardware components that work hand in hand with the operating system to conserve power. Mac OS X spins down hard drives and activates sleep mode on already energy-efficient LED-backlit displays. And it balances tasks across both central processors and graphics processors. Mac OS X never misses a power-saving opportunity, no matter how small. It even regulates the processor between keystrokes, reducing power between the letters you type. That's just one of many ways Apple manages small amounts of power that add up to big savings.

ENERGY STAR Qualification
The iMac meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, making it ENERGY STAR qualified. ENERGY STAR 5.0 sets significantly higher efficiency limits for power supplies and aggressive limits for the computer's typical annual power consumption.

5 out of 5 stars All I can say is I love mine !!!   July 17, 2010
Randy M (Des Moines, IA United States)
I got this 27" iMac from amazon. As a prime member, I got free ship at 2 days. Arrived on time. A+ amazon prime !!! Well worth the $70 bucks yearly membership. I've saved that easily in shipping and I've only had prime for 5 months so far. Its nice to get things super fast at zero shipping cost.

But now to the iMac...
I have had no heat issues, no DVD slot issues. This iMac screen is big but not too big.
I was worried 27 was way overkill, but I enjoy the xtra realestate. Super clear picture screen, great sound from the built in speakers.
And I easily added 4 more GB memory via a removable slot at the bottom of the monitor. It takes small notebook-type memory.
Comes with 4GB (2-2GB mem cards = 4GB), but has a total of 4 slots. So you just need to add "two" more 2GB cards to get 8GB total.
Very simple to add. Just 3 screws to remove and pop the memory in. Many youtubes out there to show you in detail (if needed).
Just search youtube "imac adding upgrading memory".

Everything worked right out of the box and on first power-up. Bluetooth mouse, keyboard paired right away.
Wireless mouse, keyboard, wireless internet. So you know what THAT means...? only one cable for the power.
No more messy multi cables. QUIET !!! These iMac's make no sound. Total silence. iLOVE that!

Im totally new to the apple iMac and their OS system, and I have enjoyed the learning experience.
Had this new 27' iMac for a while now, and never one blue-screen, never one freeze-up, never one system-hang. NOT ONE !!!
Love the new mouse and touch scrolling.. WOW!!! Love the small compact keyboard.

If you want to spend your time using the computer, and not waste time getting the computer to work, this is the
only way to go. Slick...Quiet...fast... (really fast), and just a true pleasure learning experience all around.

4 out of 5 stars Really impressed with this iMac   July 5, 2010
VideoGuy
As a videographer and software developer using many PCs, I was reluctant to switch to a Mac as I have too much investment in software. But I am currently developing a program that was for the PC & Mac. So my intention was to buy an inexpensive test machine. I took a chance and got a little crazy with this new iMac (thanks to a price reduction at Amazon). After years of frozen software, crashes and much frustration on many, many PCs, I am happy to say I now own a Mac. I have only had it for about three weeks so I may be changing my mind soon but right now it is great.

The 27" display and 2560x1440 resolution is just awesome (although I may have to get new glasses). Adding printers, external drives, Mac and non-Mac software just works. No problems, no hunting and pecking, it just works with minimum effort. I even loaded my RealBasic development software and created my first Mac application. I tried connecting wired and wireless to my Dish internet service and it works perfectly. I've had none of the problems of other reviewers (yet).

The screen glare could be a problem but I like my lighting overhead and the rest of my office dark. The top of the display does get a bit toasty but not near as bad as some laptops I've had. The only real problem I can see is that Apple has a strange way of adding memory. The screws to the access door are so tiny and appear to be none standard, so I had a difficult time getting to the memory. I can see where those of you with sausage fingers and minimum dexterity with a screwdriver could strip the screws.

I'm still learning my way around the Snow Leopard OS with a couple of Dummy books but what I see so far is very impressive. If it changes I'll report back.

4 out of 5 stars Ships quicker than Amazon says   June 22, 2010

Once again, Amazon did their typical "sandbagging" or "under promise, over deliver" routine with this computer. I've bought two flat screen tv's from Amazon in the past and they did the same thing...told me it would take 2-3 weeks to deliver the item, and then surprise, the gods smile upon you and it gets delivered in 3 days and you feel like you won the lottery and think Amazon is just the greatest thing since sliced bread ;)

This item says it will ship almost a month or more after its purchase date, but don't believe that. I placed my order on Thursday June 10th. The following Thursday June 17th, I received an email saying and my item's shipping date had been updated and it would ship out that day and shockingly, would be delivered the very next day. So really it took only one week and one day from the time I ordered it, to get the computer on Friday June 18th. Not so bad after all.

I wish Amazon would not sandbag so much on these lead times because I was very close to cancelling my order all week, taking the tax hit ($234) and just buying the i5 iMac directly from the Apple store down the street, since it was telling me I wouldn't get delivery until July 16th-July 30th. I'm glad I waited though and didn't act on that urge to cancel.

As for the item itself, everything arrived in ship shape, no damage, no issues and I'm loving the iMac so far. I didn't give 5 stars because I think Amazon should stop over estimating these delivery times and be more realistic its customers. I guarantee they are losing business over it and scaring people off who would otherwise buy from Amazon and get a great deal. No one wants to wait a month or more to get something like this once they've finally made the decision to make such a big purchase and are excited and anxious to get it, regardless of the tax savings. But by offering this item tax free and shipping as fast as they did, it really is a huge savings and a great deal to buy through Amazon and I recommend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars THE Perfect Computer...   June 13, 2010

I've been a Mac fan/user since 1994 and this new iMac 27" is the best yet. If you're thinking of upgrading to a newer iMac, this is the time. I debated for a while and waited to see if the good reviews were in for the new quad-core version. Now I'm glad I have it. I enjoy watching videos and NetFlix instant movies and hulu shows on full screen which is now 16-9 ratio. I have a Logitech speaker system hooked up as I felt the on-board speakers were puny. The shiny glass screen has not been a glare problem like I'd heard. The aluminum body acts as a heat sink, and it does get very hot at times, but rarely does the fan come on, so it is extremely quiet in normal operation. My old iMac was so noisy (ringing in my ears after shutdown) and always had the fan coming on (very noisy). The new LED screen is gorgeous and higher res than HD - everything is bright and clear. The included software takes care of most persons daily needs. Some folks may want to buy iWorks for business programs. I wasn't sure if I'd like the new smaller wireless keyboard but it's great and don't miss the numeric pad or the wires. The new magic mouse is a great device even though I use a Wacom tablet most of the time (recommended!).
Bottom line -- don't wait, buy this iMac now if you can afford it. You won't be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Bad component quality and support   June 6, 2010

First the OS for Macs are great and a user will experience very few if any real programming problems.Interface is easy to use and the ability to use bootcamp or paralells to run windows is great also. The forums and myself have reported that a major problem is the quality of the internal parts of the Imacs. You can google it and go to all the mac forums and you can judge yourself. IMacs are having a notorious problem with their motherboards/logicboards. My Imac died after a little more thena year of use and it seems that this has occured on numerous occasions with others by judging the mac forum posts. I was qouted a price of about $900 to replace the motherboard and video card. Remember almost all the internal parts are soldered into one solid piece. I can replace the motherboard byself and am in the process in buying an after market one. My Dell PC which I bought in 2000 is still running along fine, even though it has windows, and the parts are cheap and easy to replace and upgrade.

I loved my Imac and I still have my old Aplle IIgs, but I will not buy any other apple product after this as the Apple makes it seem that they delibertly try to make it impossible for persons to upgrade or replace parts in their apple products. I urge buyers to weight the costs of a PC vs. Mac. The PC windows has problems, but a PC can be bought for under $500 and are easy to fix and upgrade. An IMAC is easy to use and has a stable operating program but costs over $1300 for one and is not cheap or easy to fix. Both have one year warrantys. Unless your doing high end graphics processing, photography, movies, etc YOU DO NOT NEED A MAC.
