Product Description Nikon NX2 Software
Nikon's Capture NX 2 software is a full-featured, nondestructive photo-editing program that gives photographers all the tools they need to quickly and easily edit their photographs. Also available in a reduced-price upgrade version (requires a valid serial number from v1.x), the software offers such editing features as color control points, selection control points, an auto-retouch brush, and shadow/highlight adjustment. Enhancing the hue, brightness, and saturation of an image is as simple as placing a color control point on your image, then adjusting the length of the sliders. For example, color control points are a remarkably convenient way to change the color of flowers to look better against green surrounding foliage. As an alternative, editors can take a dull gray sky and add blue to change the mood of a captured scene. The selection control points, meanwhile, let you selectively edit photographs without manually outlining or masking the area for editing. Simply place a selection control point anywhere on the photograph, and then choose from almost any adjustment, including D-Lighting, Unsharp Mask, or Noise Reduction, while limiting the 'reach" of that adjustment to just the selected area. Capture NX 2 also adds an automatic retouch tool to its image editing toolbox, allowing users to seamlessly remove blemishes, dust, and other distracting elements from photographs while maintaining the integrity of the image. And thanks to the shadow/highlight adjustment, you can easily open up shadows or recover blown-out highlights. Highlight recovery is most effective for RAW (NEF) files; however, it will work with JPEG and TIFF files as well. The software's redesigned v2 interface includes such features as customized workspaces, an improved toolbar function and layout, improved edit list functionality, a redesigned image browser with a favorites folder, and improved image resolution adjustments. The software's holdover features from v1.x range include black/white/neutral control points, color management control, color aberration control, distortion control, a color booster, contrast/brightness adjustment, a saturation/warmth adjustment, black-and-white conversion, straighten and crop tools, and much more. Finally, Capture NX 2 features award-winning U Point technology for precision selection and application of enhancements without complicated selections or layer masks. Designed to closely match the way photographers work with their images, Capture NX2 is easy to learn and creates the highest-quality results. Note that the software fully integrated with all Nikon software, including Camera Control Pro 2, Image Authentication Software, Transfer, and ViewNX. Will Wait July 23, 2010 magicant 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I, for one, am willing to wait until NIKON decides to upgrade to 64-bit compatibility with Windows 7. I tried the 60 day freebie and had issues, apparently as a result of the above, so won't be making a purchase until I'm sure the program is completely functional with my system. Not sure why NIKON wouldn't be interested in keeping pace with the latest computer advances. Perhaps Windows 7 is simply a passing phase?
Great program July 8, 2010 Tom Manson (Western Hemisphere) I downloaded the demo version for 60 days before deciding to buy for my Mac. After the 2 month trial, I was hooked. The interface is a little clunky, but with practice this is a great program. The AFter the Shoot book is boring but very helpful for getting the most out of the program. I use NX2 to process all of my RAW/NEF files from my D90. The selection control points are a unique way to choose an area of a photo and apply any adjustment----lighten, darken, saturate, change color, sharpen, blur, etc.-----to just that area. Any weaknesses? Some complain of the program being slow. I have 4GB of RAM on a Mac mini and it runs fine. It could use a clone tool. And of course there are no graphic design features like on Photoshop. But if you want to enhance images rather than create them, NX2 is great.
Nikon Capture NX 2 Full Version July 3, 2010 Gerald J. Bryda This Nikon Capture NX 2 Full Version software is 100 times better than Adobe Elements 8.0. Nikon has come thru with a real "WINNER".
Nikon Capture NX2 June 25, 2010 David Rackley (AUSTIN, TEXAS, US) After spending 15 days or so with the trial version of Capture NX2, making the purchase was an easy decision. The software fits well with my workflow, and it makes color adjustments and touch-ups extremely quick, thanks to the U Point edit controls -- gone are the days of multiple adjustment layers and time consuming mask development. The software handles Nikon NEF files (and JPEG and TIFF) without hesitaton. As a result, my images now reach their full potential with the lossless NEF compression. Another advantage of Capture NX2 is my edits are, now, non-destructive, so I can be as creative as necessary yet still have the original image available across multiple edit sessions. I installed the software on a Dell Vostro with 4GB of memory.
To complete the package I added Color Efex Pro 3.0-Complete (for NX2). These additional filters have helped make my work "pop". Nik Software did a great job with the cross-compatibility of these two software packages.
Regarding my rating for Mac, the software packaging states that it is compatible, but I did not test it on a Mac platform.
Solid software May 13, 2010 photog wannabe (US) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I use it mainly for batch conversions of my RAW Photos coming out of my camera to preview them as jpegs and weed through them. Once I pick the ones I am interested in I will tweak them and crop them in the software. Works well and have no issues with it. Running it on an 2.16ghz Dell laptop with XP pro and 2GB of RAM. Works just fine as long as I don't have a bunch of other programs running all at the same time. Will batch process 300 raw files to jpeg in 10 minutes.
Make sure to watch some of the tutorials on nikons webpage about the software to get an idea of the things this software can do. Really pretty powerful stuff, especially with D-lighting.
