Product Description Item #: 35050F. The 85 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection. When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC cord is provided with the adapter for maximum cord length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.Designed to be the perfect traveling companion, the adapter has a clever design, which allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage. This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery. Adapter cables not very durable July 28, 2010 Eric Aderhold (Seattle, WA USA) I got one of these adapters with the purchase of a MacBook Pro about 3½ years ago. The MagSafe feature is really handy. It probably saved my computer from a crash to the ground at least five times because someone tripped over the cord, bumped into it, etc. In each case the cord came unplugged from the computer (as it is designed to do) without pulling the machine down with it.
Unfortunately, the cables on this power supply are not very durable. A little over a year after I bought my Mac, the outer insulation on the attached cord separated from the power brick, exposing a few inches of the wire inside. I was able to put electrical tape around it. The adapter still functioned in this state for almost two years, but eventually the exposed wires shorted out and the adapter failed to charge the laptop reliably.
My girlfriend, who purchased her MacBook Pro at about the same time, experienced a similar problem, except it was the insulation around the AC extension cable that came apart. I replaced my faulty power adapter with a cheaper, generic model (MAGSAFE 85W Power Adapter for Apple MacBook Pro) that is still working fine after four months.
To increase the longevity of the power adapter, I recommend that you avoid winding the cord very tightly around the built-in winder clips.
No Problems July 14, 2010 R. Anderson (Marquette, MI USA) I've had none of the problems mentioned by the people giving this power supply poor reviews. I've had good results, and I have two of them in use; one for two years. My birds have tried to make them fail by chewing on them but so far only been able to ding the outer insulation. We use our computers everyday, all over the house, and they go with us traveling. I especially like the mag safe connection. That thing has saved my computer several times. The only complaint I have is the price, but for something that performs so well I guess I can't complain.
There are a couple things you can do to reduce the possibility of insulation failure. There is a small sliding piece on the small part of the power cable that has a notch in it. You can make a small loop in the cable and click it into the notch. That will keep tension from being put on the cord. Another option is the magsaver, you can get it at [...]. It's a gadget that you attach to the end of the cable and it prevents kinking of the insulation.
The only reason I'm buying another adapter is to have a spare that I leave at the office.
Works well, but not forever July 10, 2010 John Schroy (Capital Flow Watch) I've been using this adaptor (with the long wall cord) for 3 years on my MacBook Pro. The only problem is that the transformer gets very hot and in time melts the rubber connection to the MagSafe adaptor. I've tried to mend this with electrical tape, but to no avail. Mac products, in general, seem to run too hot. On my MacBook Pro, I've installed a piece of software that speeds up the fan and this helps somewhat. But on the MagSafe power cord, there is no such easy solution.
Nevertheless, the cord lasted me 3 years, so I can't complain too much.
I plan to buy a new adaptor and use the extension cord from the old one to plug in the wall. I hope this works.
To extend the life of this adaptor, I would suggest that care is taken to never have the transformer covered by a pillow, magazine, or anything the interrupts air circulation. Also, take care that the fragile MagSafe adaptor line is never under or over the transformer, lest the heat melt the rubber.
Love my Apple MacBook Adapters July 2, 2010 Jim Gerdy (Chicago, IL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The technical details and specs of the adapters have been covered well in a lot of reviews along with Apple's specifications. I would just add a few points.
1. I have never had a laptop power supply break on me. That goes back to their pre-magsafe versions on the iBooks years ago. I have had the airports and batteries wear out after a few years, but the power supplies have given me years of heavy use with no problems. I understand peoples' complaints that heat and tension on the wires can cause wear or breakdowns. I am fairly careful to ventilate my computer and power supply plus always leave slack on the cords. So they always outlast my laptops. That is, my laptops go obsolete well before the power supply dies.
2. I would add that I have very spikey bad power where I live and this power supply gives consistent reliable power to my laptops (even when my desktops get rebooted in brownouts and such).
3. The magsafe is a nice feature at a good price. As people point out $79 is not cheap, but neither is the competition. I don't follow Dell or HP or the others too closely but I believe Apple went magsafe before the others. So kudos to Apple.
4. Finally it's worth noting that the 85W version for the 15 and 17 inch Pro's costs the same as the 60W version for the 13 inch model. Apple claims that the 85W will automatically power down for the 13 inch so I figure the best buy is to buy the 85W and use it on any size Pro (or polycarb). They are all $79 after all.
Quick and reliable April 14, 2010 A. Buckley (Mobile, AL USA) Thank you for sending the Apple 85W magsafe power adapter. It came quickly and was packaged well with no damage.
