After Two Years of Use - A Swing and a Miss for Apple July 28, 2010 Alan Taylor (Chicago, IL United States) Firstly, I will admit here, I am a HUGE Apple fan. I truly love their products, own a lot of them, and am quite impressed and satisfied with most of them. At the top of my list of Apple disappointments, however, would be the AppleTV. In theory, it is a great concept... if only it performed as advertised. On the positive side, the AppleTV has great picture and sound quality, though you should note output is 1080i, not full 1080p. Not a big deal to me, but some purists might want to know. The user interface is easy to understand, and is attractive displayed on your HD flatscreen TV. However, there are a few too many major negatives for me to be able to wholeheartedly recommend this product. Here's a list of the negatives associated with the AppleTV after two years of use.
1) The interface is insufferably sluggiush and laggy at times. Especially when accessing a large music library or when syncing, this thing can be painfully slow to respond to your commands. You'll click a button and wait 20-30 seconds for a response from the unit. Not at all acceptable. Not one bit. This is my biggest complaint with the AppleTV.
2) It only performs as advertised if you have a small music library. If your music library is big, syncing your library to the AppleTV is incredibly, horribly, painfully slow and streaming your content isn't really an option because it takes forever to load all of the artist and track information for a big library. You're much better off syncing a small select playlist to your AppleTV for listening, but do NOT in any way expect to upload or stream a large music library. This thing just can think or communicate quickly enough to make it work well. The bigger your library, the more laggy it performs.
3) I can find no way to shut the gosh darn thing off. I think when it goes on "standby" it simply turns off the video output. The thing stays warm to the touch around the clock unless you pull the plug out of the wall. A power button is a very strange omission in my opinion.
4) It runs quite warm, with no internal fan for cooling. So, it is not suitable for use inside unvented or already hot a/v cabinets. You also can't stack anything on top of it or I think it's bound to overheat.
All in all, if all you are doing is streaming from the internet and syncing a small music library - this might work for you. But in my book, this is the only Apple product I regret purchasing. I would wait until the next generation of Apple TV is released, with more RAM, and a better design. Two years on now, the new version can't be too far behind.
Love it! July 21, 2010 Paul Chase I have an older HD TV without an ethernet port. Apple TV gives me most of the same functionality without a TV upgrade. I'm glad I bought it.
Completes The Digital Media Experience July 18, 2010 Luke Skywalker (Morgan Hill, CA USA) For some time I had looked at the Apple TV product and had wondered how I might use it with my already existing Tivo and Samsung BD players which all have ways to rent movies on them and Tivo already allowed me to play my music as well as view my photos from my Mac. That is until a friend of mine told me about the Apple Remote application for the iPhone which allowed me to control my iTunes music and volume right from my iPhone as well as Apple TV's ability to stream my iTunes music from my Mac using AirTunes. I also had another reason to look into using Apple TV product and that was I had shows that I was keeping on my Tivo and taking up valuable space but no way to archive them unless I wanted to put them all on DVD's using the Tivo Transfer and the Toast Titanium 10 application. Then I found out that I could archive and stream them from my Mac to Apple TV but I still had a challenge. Toast would only allow me to transcode them to the 640x480 resolution which is fine if I wanted to play that back on a 4x3 monitor or my iPod. I ended up finding an application called Pavtube HD Video Converter which can transcode Tivo files to be played back on a number of devices including Apple TV at 1280x720 which is the highest quality video that Apple TV can accept for streaming. After some trial and error I am now able to stream my archived Tivo HD and SD shows from my Mac to Apple TV over my wireless connection. Another benefit I found was that my family who are not very technically savvy have also really enjoyed using Apple TV for all the shared media as well.
does what it says it will do, but nothing more. July 7, 2010 Gaba Hey (Palm Desert, CA) This is a good product and it does exactly what Apple says it will do. The setup, like all Apple products, is a breeze. I just wish it would do more, like hooking up with Hulu, Netflix instant play, and Amazon video streaming. I can watch Netflix instant-play on my iPad, but not thru Apple TV. UPDATE: Just rented "Green Zone" for $3.99 via Apple TV and iTunes. I am disappointed in the picture and sound quality. It's not as good as a standard DVD, and of course, not even close to Blu-Ray. However, I downloaded a free HD video from iTunes, and the quality was just as good as a blu-ray DVD.
Much better than cable tv! May 27, 2010 Heather (Virginia) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
First I need to mention that I got a 2010 Apple TV with the latest software update. The photos above show the older version, and some of the reviews here will be describing the older version. There have been significant improvements to the interface and capability.
You've got to know what the Apple TV can and cannot do before you commit to one, because it's not for everyone. It is not a receiver for TV stations, or a DVR, or a box that will stream anything from the web (although it can be legally hacked for more internet streaming functionality). What it does do is play all of your iTunes movies, tv shows, podcasts, music videos, and music as well as give you access to YouTube and many radio stations on your television screen. You can also display your photos on your big screen. It also gives you access to the iTunes Store from your television where you can buy and rent movies, view previews, and download free content right from the comfort of your couch. If you have music in the form of iTunes LP it looks fantastic on the big screen of your TV - definitely superior than just listening to an ordinary album. And I can think of NO other box for your TV that will allow you to watch your music videos. The video quality is very high. Much of the content on iTunes is available in HD, and the things that are not still are DVD quality and look good. YouTube doesn't look so great since the videos were not intended for the big screen, but that isn't Apple's fault, and I still enjoy the feature. You can access your own YouTube account and favorites through the Apple TV.
The unit is small and will fit easily on most people's entertainment center. The unit does get hot, and there is no off button - only standby - but this has not posed any problems for me and I could always unplug it. The unit connects to your television through your wireless connection or ethernet cable. You do not hook the Apple TV up to your computer with a USB cable as you do your iPod. You can choose to synch whatever content from your iTunes library you wish, or stream the content if your computer is on. You will need to buy an HDMI cable to hook up your Apple TV - it is not included (or your composite cables, also not included). Installation is so easy "a cave man could do it".
I crunched the numbers and found it would be CHEAPER to buy an Apple TV and ALL of my favorite shows on iTunes to watch commercial free and at my own convenience than it is to pay my cable TV bill (year of cable service vs. Apple TV and all my shows in a year purchased). I no longer have a reason to pay to watch commercials on 200+ channels I don't even want and be tied down to the network's schedule, and at the end of the month I have something to show for my hard earned money (iTunes shows I own and can watch again and again) instead of just a new cable bill.
I very, very highly recommend Apple TV for people who are looking for an alternative to cable and satellite TV as long as you are willing to pay for some content. You watch what you want, when you want, with no commercials. It is an excellent value and a great entertainment center.
