1 out of 5 stars Never a Sony again.   April 12, 2008

If it were possible, I'd give this 0 stars. This is based on my unit (VGN-FS660) ever since it was new. Caveat: this review is based on facts, not emotions.

Pro's:
1) Nice screen

Con's:
1) Wireless internet is extremely slow, when it does decide to work. Wireless adapter switches on/off all the time so unable to enjoy a seamless internet experience.

2) Laptop appears slow, eventhough I have enough RAM, virus/malware/spyware protection, and the system has been optimized (including removal of all that unnecessary Sony junk software).

3) Useless "battery" (if you can call it a battery).

4) Touchpad is unpredictable. Frequently changing between too responsive or not responsive at all and/or time lag, even after tweaking the settings.

5) Poor quality control; a piece of the internal power jack came out when unplugging the ac adapter. This was with regular use, not pulling or tripping on the ac adapter. So even more cash outlay as the warranty had expired.

6)My 2nd laptop (Acer) with the exact same specs as this sony (except the hard disk size) is infinitely times faster eventhough it cost me almost a 1/3 of the sony price! And no, I am not promoting Acer (no longer own one).

7) Sony's money hungry after sales service. I called up Sony customer service with a simple question regarding a spare part. They wanted $29.99 + tax to answer the question before i even had a chance to ask it. I told them this was very simple regarding the part and not some technical assistance which may warrant them charging. They then agreed, i asked the question and was put on hold. They subsequently told me they were unable to answer that question! They then advised me it would be best if i would send in the laptop, specifying any minor parts repair would be charged at $299 + tax, and major ones at $699 + tax! Incredible. Firstly i didn't mention i needed a repair, and even if i did, for the price i bought this thing and the nonsense i got, i should be offered free after sales services for the life of this junk. And $750+ for a laptop repair??! You can get a fully loaded brand new HP or Dell, with much better and newer specs for LESS than their repair price and even a T61 Thinkpad for slightly more (if you shop smart)!!

Sony "robs" you both when and after you buy.

Generally speaking, Sony electronics have bloated prices which they don't warrant. Pay for the brand? If this was 30 years ago during the walkman days when Sony products were king, ok. But for a long time now, Sony products have lagged in quality, although perhaps not in aesthetics and certainly not price and subsequent costs....Never ever (people say don't say never ever, but in this case i definitely will!) will I even entertain the idea of getting a Sony product.

This is so sad, beacause when I got it, I was so excited that I finally had a sleek envy-worthy computer. I paid a lot of money, and as a student Im making do because I cant afford another one.

"Turning On the Grill"

The laptop worked perfectly for 1 year, then it started heating up, then the heat became uncomfortable to the touch, then it just heated up and 30 minutes later it would turn itself off. So now when I use it, I run it on low power and low screen light. Right off the bat, my headphone jack got busted and now two of the USBs don't work. Im down to one USB, when it breaks Im screwd.

This computer was fine for a while. Excellent picture clarity and quality, bright screen, good speakers for a laptop etc. BUT BEWARE, THEY BREAK RELENTLESSLY! I had a problem from the beginning, the sound stopped working, needed major repairs within 6 months of owning! Then Just after my extended warentee ran out the thing died all together! Out on nowhere the motherboard just crashed! This was after only two years of ownership on a pricey laptop. The battery life was TERRIBLE 1 hour tops! Customer support was unhelpful and frustrating. STAY AWAY FROM SONY VAIO!

1 out of 5 stars Not what I ordered.   August 9, 2007

I ordered this Sony Vaio VGN-FS660 on-line. I received a different model, instead I received a VGN-FS875P. I was trying to replace a laptop. I am just glad that all of my accessories still fit this model, but it is heavier, with different memory, speed, weight, etc. I was disappointed that I was not notified if the company was out of stock, or if this was just shody company policy. They must have assumed that this was an upgrade. I want the choice, not to have the choice made for me. Poor, very poor.

It is a good little machine, it is fast, it is easy to use. The only thing I dont like is the mouse is way too sensitive. But it is a great buy for the amount paid. Highly Reccommended!
