Featuring one of the speediest Intel Pentium M (Centrino) processors, the M45-S331 can sweetly handle today's demanding business productivity software suites. It also offers powerful multimedia capabilities for presentations--and for unwinding with a DVD movie while travelling. The M45-S331 features a large 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, a 15.4-inch screen, DVD SuperMulti optical drive that burns both CDs and multiple DVD formats, and integrated 54g wireless connectivity. For a more powerful Centrino processor and even larger hard drive, check out the M45-S351. The Basics - Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is one of the larger sizes you'll find in a notebook, and it's befitting of such an entertainment-centric PC. It offers more than enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors. You'll also be able to store a good-sized digital audio library.
- Processor: The 1.6 GHz Pentium M (Centrino) processor approaches the higher end of speed for this processor class. It is well equipped for office productivity software tasks, from complex spreadsheets to databases. The Pentium M processor is designed specifically for low-power mobile usage, and it features the latest in power-saving technologies--ensuring you push your battery and productivity to the max. It also has a large 2 MB L2 cache--which will help speed up your system's performance--and a quick 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB).
- Memory: The 512 MB (333 MHz) of built-in memory is becoming the standard for notebooks, and the M45X-S331 can be expanded to 2 GB of memory--necessary for running complex spreadsheets and multimedia applications.
- CD/DVD Drive: Toshiba's DVD SuperMulti drive reads and burns all major disc formats: DVD+RW, DVD-RW, and CD-RW. For DVD-RW discs, it has a 1x write/rewrite speed, while for DVD+RW discs it has a 2x write/rewrite speed (DVDs are read at 5x). For CDs, it has a 16x write/10x rewrite/40x read speed.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 101-key keyboard and two-button touchpad with on/off button and dedictated vertical scroll up/down pad.
Screen, Graphcs and Sound The 15.4-inch widescreen Ultimate TrueBrite TFT active matrix LCD screen provides a bright, vivid display and allows images to be seen from a wider angle than most notebooks. Military in Iraq--do not buy Satellite M45 15.4" Notebook--Display went out after 4 months March 19, 2006 Steven Frank Purchased the Satellite M45 Dec 05 from AAFES on Military base in Kuwait. Now is Mar 06 and the backlight display has already gone out. called Toshiba customer service, had to ask for a supervisor to get a competent person. in order to get repaired, must 1] take to an "authorized service center" in the states or 2] they will send you a box you can ship it to them, but must pay $24 for the box. and they only partnered UPS. no UPS in Iraq and nearest repair shop in Kuwait, but not covered under "international warranty."
know of several other service members with this type of notebook that have had display or battery problems and now out of $1K
guaranteed to have problems if you buy this. make sure to back up data everyday because you never know when display will go out.
M45-S331 FREEZING/LOCK-UP problem is SOLVED. December 27, 2005 Jolian Ibrahim (California USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The M45-S331 is a great notebook, I had it for a year now and I owned 5 other Toshiba notebooks. This model is one of the best.
The reason I am writing this review is to tell everybody that the problem with the Freezing/Lock-up when connecting AC power while the wireless is ON has been solved. All you have to do is to download the latest BIOS from Toshiba website:
ACPI Flash BIOS version 1.90 for Satellite M40 (Intel Display Adapter only)

I tried it and the problem is gone forever.
Merry Christmas to all...
If I did not have all this $$$ in this laptop I would smash it! August 8, 2005 G. Kology 4 out of 9 found this review helpful
I bought this laptop because of its reliability ratings in Consumer Reports. Everything works fine except when going on-line. As most have experienced, the laptop freezes up. I have tried with just battery, with AC on before I turn it on, with wireless off and on, it makes no difference and it is frustrating to no end. I end up shutting the laptop off and sometimes it actually works right the next time. I cannot imagine why Toshiba does not offer a fix to its customers instead of giving them lip service. I wouldn't buy another Toshiba if my life depended on it.
Great Laptop July 2, 2005 Inner Quest (Oakland) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this laptop about 4 months ago and I am very pleased with it. Everything works great as advertised and I am very impressed with its wireless capabilities. All the peripheral devices that I plugged into it were instantly recognized and installed without me having to load any software. These included a wireless mouse, flash drive, and USB hub.
There is a design problem with the laptop however. While working in Battery mode with wireless turned on, if you plug in the AC, it freezes. Nothing works it won't even turn off. The first time this happened to me it was scary but I found a solution. If you keep pressing the on/off switch for 5 seconds it will reset itself. The problem can be avoided by simply turning off wireless before plugging in AC, easily done since there is a mechanical switch to do this.
My biggest dissapointment is with Toshiba support. The webpage doesn't mention anything about the wireless freeze, even though it's known issue by now. As far as resetting the computer they say to insert a pin into the reset hole like the old laptops. This laptop doesn't have a reset hole, you just have to press and hold the on/off switch.
I highly recommend this laptop.
Returned it after 18 hours June 9, 2005 Sangeet Agarwal 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I brought the Toshiba M45-S331 and promptly returned it within 18 hours.
The wireless connection is way to erratic. If you go from battery to AC while you are on wireless then the system simply freezes.
I noticed the DVD drive made a horrible loud sound when it was reading data.
After keeping the system on for about 5 hours I noticed that the laptop was beginning to get quite hot. I had placed the laptop on a desk so I doubt very much if I was blocking any vents.
The only saving grace for this system is the fantastic LCD display, though I doubt any one would want to pay for just that on a system that is inherently so faulty (I believe the system freezing up problem described above is well known - I am curious as to why Toshiba has not fixed that problem and if it is unable to rectify the problem then why does it continue to ship faulty systems).
I now have a dv4030us from HP. This does seem to be a more reliable and sturdy system.
All said and done, I doubt very much if I will ever buy another Toshiba product let alone a laptop.
